2018 was a busy year for the teammates at Cooper Nuclear Station (CNS). This year brought a World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) evaluation, a refueling outage, plus many more activities sprinkled throughout the year. Since Cooper is on a 24-month fuel cycle, evaluations and outages land in the same year, so the team is no stranger to the pressure, and, for the second time, Cooper was able to continue their Operational Excellence.
In 2016, the station received their first exemplary rating from INPO in over twenty years. This was a major feat for the organization and a testament to the hard-work, dedication, and loyalty that each and every employee put in to the station, as well as the investment provided to Cooper by the Board of Directors and the team at Nebraska Public Power District. The CNS site knew that the only thing harder than getting your first exemplary rating, is getting the second. After continuing to implement new processes and learning from the challenges that arose throughout the years, CNS was able to earn another Operational Excellence award from WANO in 2018. The team at Cooper earned various Strengths as well as some Areas for Improvement during the evaluation, and they are excited about the opportunity presented to them to continue to grow throughout the next cycle.
Though the evaluation and results all happened in June, members of the CNS team recently went to accept the award for Excellence in Atlanta, Georgia during INPO’s annual award ceremony. Various members of the management team were present during the award ceremony, and Lance Davis, a member of the Safety and Human Performance department, went up to accept the award on behalf of the entire workforce at CNS.
With the evaluation complete, the award hanging on the wall of the facility, and 2018 coming to an end, it is a great time to reflect on all of the hard work completed this year and look forward to every new accomplishment in the years to come, including Maintenance and Technical Training reaccreditation in 2019.
Wishing everyone a Safe and Happy Holidays and a prosperous 2019 from the team at Cooper Nuclear Station!
