Chief nuclear officers (CNOs) representing the Utilities Service Alliance (USA) fleet participated in a recent briefing with their Japanese counterparts which included a tour of the U.S. nuclear industry’s new emergency response center in Phoenix and discussions on safety and emergency preparedness.

The Japanese visit was scheduled following the fall 2013 visit by United States CNOs to the Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini nuclear plant sites. During the visit, CNOs from both countries discussed a variety of topics including accident mitigation, emergency operating procedures, safety culture, emergency communications and exercises, and the ongoing recovery at Fukushima Daiichi.

“We continue to learn from each other on how we can improve our operations and our ability to respond to extreme events,” explained USA Board Chair Tim Rausch, chief nuclear officer of PPL Susquehanna. “We have made great strides in the past few years but must continue to explore changes that ensure the safety of our plants and the communities that we serve.”

One of the changes for the United States nuclear industry this past year was the establishment of two national response centers in Phoenix and Memphis. The facilities are capable of delivering full sets of emergency response equipment to any United States nuclear plant within 24 hours of an extreme event.
