USA fleet member Xcel Energy and its nuclear fleet reached a milestone on July 10, 2015 when the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant accomplished a zero Total Industrial Safety Accident (TISA) rate. Prairie Island accomplished the same feat in April of this year. This places both stations in the top quartile of INPO performance among the U.S. nuclear fleet.

“This is a great accomplishment, and it is the foundation for tomorrow’s successes. I’ve always seen safety as a leading performance indicator. When we’re safe, there is a good chance we’re doing many other things right as well. A zero TISA rate is an indication that we have the right picture in mind when we work, and it is good news for our future as we continue to improve overall performance,” stated Tim O’Connor Xcel Energy’s Senior Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer. “A zero TISA rate does not come easily, and this milestone is not permission to take a break from safe work practices. It is very easy to become complacent. Now the hard part: sustaining it!”

Xcel Energy’s CEO and Chairman of the Board Ben Fowke added, “I’d like to congratulate our nuclear fleet for working as a team to achieve this safety milestone. It demonstrates that the nuclear department is a leader in our Journey to Zero. The same mindset and dedication to safety that has driven safety performance, and positioned us as industry leaders, will also help keep us there. Thank you. Keep up the good work.”

The Total Industrial Safety Accident Rate (TISA) indicator measures work-related injuries that result in restrictions, lost time or fatalities. The rate takes into account accidents for all personnel (employee and contractor) assigned to a station per 200,000 man-hours.

In 2013, there were two lost time injuries at Prairie Island and two at Monticello. These injuries have now moved outside the TISA indicator window.

Everyone contributes to safety performance every day. This is a shared accomplishment. Using human performance tools, such as the Two-Minute Drill and Stop-Think-Act-Review (STAR) method for elf-checking, helped the fleet reach zero and will help it stay there.
