USA fleet member PSEG Nuclear’s Salem Unit 1 began its 23rd refueling outage Sunday night.
PSEG Nuclear employees will be supported by 1,400 contractors during the outage. Together, they will complete more than 22,000 scheduled work activities.
High level major work includes replacing various valves, relays, actuators, and seals; and replacing about one third of 193 fuel assemblies in the reactor core. Several inspections will be conducted including a portion of the service water header, moisture separator reheater tube bundle and the main condenser. Maintenance will also be performed on the vital and non-vital electrical busses, station power transformer and main generator end winding.
The unit has a generating capacity of 1175 megawatts and is on an 18 month refueling cycle. Salem Unit 2 and Hope Creek remain at full power.
