USA Member Susquehanna Station conducted its annual Contaminated Injury Drill successfully, safely and event-free at the end of June in accordance with Emergency Planning procedures.

Six offsite agencies participated in this drill, which included ‘patient’ movement from the site to ambulances—including Team Susquehanna member Rosie Gerlach who served as the injured party and was flown via Life Flight helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa., nearly 20 miles away.

According to Susquehanna’s Emergency Planning Manager Jim Gorman, all objectives for the drill were demonstrated and improvement items were noted. A full report will be completed and distributed in 30 days.

Highlights from the drill include:
• Along with Berwick and Geisinger Danville Hospitals, the drill was supported by Shickshinny EMS, Pond Hill/Lily Lake EMS, Salem Township Fire Department and Geisinger Life Flight
• The Drill was supported by site workers from Emergency Planning, Radiation Protection, Nuclear Security, Operations, Occupational Athletics and Document Control Services
• It was noted that the knowledge and personal engagement of the RP Technicians at both hospitals contributed to their success and they took the opportunity afterward to help further educate the hospital staff
• One of Susquehanna’s Security Instructors pulled double-duty during the drill, after completing his volunteer drill position of Site First Aid Team Control Cell, he assisted the Salem Township Fire Department (where he is a volunteer) with the safe landing and departure of Life Flight at the designated landing area

Congratulations, Team Susquehanna Emergency Planning, for assisting in the coordination and execution of a drill designed to test its capabilities and those of our community support agencies.
