The Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant sends a big salute to the Utilities Service Alliance (USA) connection through which Fermi 2 ALARA engineering technician Tony Pezzino is spending 45 days assisting in RFO26.

Pezzino, who has benchmarked and/or worked at 15 utilities as part of his Fermi career, assisted Monticello with oversight of a Torus diving project and control rod drive maneuvers in the vital removal of fuel assemblies as part of the refueling.

“Monticello Radiation Protection is very appreciative of the Utilities Service Alliance connection that created the opportunity for Tony to be a key member of our ALARA force during our refueling,” said Monticello RP Manager Alan Zelie. “Tony has made a big difference in lending his expertise and OE to our outage teams. We’d love to have him back again when we’re on-line.”

Tony is at Monticello on loan from the Fermi plant in Newport, Mich. until mid-April on arrangements made by Zelie and Fermi RP Manager Rick LaBurn as part of a USA talent exchange.

“Part of the reason I’m here,” said Tony, “is to benchmark new ideas that we might be able to use at Fermi. I am surprised at how advanced Monticello is in executing its plan, particularly with the new Remote Monitoring System that the rest of the Industry should come to Monticello to look at. Monticello has a solid ALARA program.”

Left to right, Monticello ALARA Supervisor Tony Hedges, Fermi ALARA Engineering Tech Tony Pezzino and Monticello RP Manager Alan Zelie are shown in the new Monticello Remote Monitoring System Control Room. Hedges and Zelie presented Tony with RFO25 and RP logowear.
