USA fleet member Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant hosted a third annual Girl Scout Nuclear Science and Technology event recently. The event has taken place at the Training Center for all three years. The event is hosted annually by Grow Women in Non-Traditional Roles (GROW) and Women in Nuclear (WIN) volunteers. It was staffed with eighteen employees from the Monticello and Prairie Island plants and the Xcel Energy Nuclear Department.

The Girl Scouts were given the opportunity to learn about nuclear power while earning their “Nuclear Science and Technology” patch.

“This was a fun event for the Girl Scouts, their parents and the volunteers who generously donate their time,” Kathy Valleau, Business Process Assistant at the Prairie Island plant. “Attending the event were 66 Girl Scouts and 23 parents.”

The Girl Scouts went through a series of activities including Atomic Jeopardy, Detecting Radiation, Fission and Power, Detecting the Atom, Working Safely in the plant and a simulator demonstration.
