USA fleet’s Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant Unit 1 exceeded its previous record breaker-to-breaker run when it began its 29th refueling outage on October 8. The unit had been running for 644 consecutive days since January 2, 2013, the longest run ever of both units at Prairie Island.

“An outage-to-outage run like this places us among the most reliable in the industry. It is something to be proud of,” said Scott Sharp, Prairie Island Director of Site Operations.  “You cannot run 644 days in a row without the expertise and commitment to excellence that our team has displayed here.”

This breaker-to-breaker run exceeds previous records of 554 days on Unit 1 and 560 days on Unit 2 set more than 11 years ago. The unit’s capacity factor during the record run was 97 percent, higher than the nuclear industry average of 90 percent.

During this outage, 600 contractors will help plant staff replace one-third of Prairie Island Unit 1’s fuel and perform maintenance tasks to prepare the unit for its next operating cycle.
