What does it take to be a leader of excellence? In Nuclear, it includes individuals nominated for demonstrating the values listed in the Picture of Xcellence, business planning and strategic principals for the benefit of the Xcel Energy Nuclear fleet, a member of the USA fleet. Michelle Kelly, manager, Monticello Performance Assessment, was chosen by her peers as the Xcel Energy nuclear department 2014 Picture of Xcellence Award winner.

Kelly was nominated for her exemplary work in improving operational performance at Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant. It was noted that she led significant improvement in the station’s Corrective Action Program that included a recent one year anniversary of no overdue CAPs. Kelly also led the Problem Identification & Resolution team though the rigorous inspection that resulted in zero NRC findings and an enormous gain in regulatory margin for the station in its recent 95002 inspection.

Kelly also played a critical role in the station’s 2014 INPO Plant Evaluation and personally helped leverage the team to only one finding when four were drafted in the Performance Improvement area. Outside of the office, it was noted that she positively influences several community events such as Girl Scout tours, Family Fun Day at the Park and more.

Secret electronic voting by attendees at the annual Nuclear Leadership meeting secured Kelly’s win. Tim O’Connor, Xcel Energy’s senior vice president and chief nuclear officer, presented the award to Kelly during his nuclear leadership meeting in early December.
